There is no formal training required presently to list your dog as a Service Dog, however they must be able to have standard obedience. The AKC provides a Canine Good Citizen test and title for basic command following. Dogs need to have a good temperament so when looking for a puppy to provide one of these services being able to see the parents and seeing what type of temperament they have can be very important.
